Prerequisite Knowledge – Students must already know…
- Kihon (Basics)
- Age Uke (Upper Block)
- Yoko Uke (Middle Block)
- Haraiotoshi Uke (Downward Sweeping Block)
- Seiken Tsuki (Front Punch)
- Sanchin Dachi (Three Battle Stance)
Instructional Sequence
- After bowing in, partners face each other in Migi Sanchin Dachi (right side, three battle stance), close enough to make solid contact with punches.
- Tori: Hidari Jodan Tsuki……………………..Uke: Hidari Age Uke
- Tori: Migi Chudan Tsuki……………………..Uke: Migi Yoko Uke
- Tori: Hidari Gedan Tsuki…………………….Uke: Hidari Haraiotoshi Uke
- Tori: Migi Age Uke……………………………..Uke: Migi Jodan Tsuki
- Tori: Hidari Yoko Uke…………………………Uke: Hidari Chudan Tsuki
- Tori: Migi Haraiotoshi Uke…………………Uke: Migi Gedan Tsuki
- Repeat sequence from Step 1.
- After a few minutes, switch to the other side of the body – starting in Hidari Sanchin Dachi.
The Chant/Terminology
- Complete Sequence: “High, Middle, Low. High, Middle, Low.”
- As with all drills, feel free to use or not use this chant OR modify it to fit your needs.
- Terminology:
- Migi – Right Side
- Hidari – Left Side
- Jodan – Upper Area
- Chudan – Middle Area
- Gedan – Lower Area
Talking Points
- The goal here is to have a continuous, flowing pattern blocking and striking.
- Over time, we want students to throw these blocks naturally, without having to stop and think through how to do it.
