Definitions of Terms from the Dojo Kun from

The American Heritage High School Dictionary, 3rd Edition.

Character n. – 1. The combination of qualities or features that distinguish one person or group from another.  2. Moral or ethical strength.  3. A description of a person’s attributes, traits, or abilities.

Courage n. – 1. The state or quality of mind or spirit that enables one to face danger, fear, or vicissitudes with self-possession and resolution; bravery.

Courtesy n. – 1. Polite behavior.  2. A polite gesture or remark.  3. Willingness or generosity in providing something needed.

Creed n. – 1. A system of beliefs, principles, or opinions.

Defend v. – 1. To make or keep safe from danger, attack, or harm.  2. To support or maintain, as by argument or action.

Effort n. – 1. The use of physical or mental energy to do something.  2. A difficult exertion of the strength or will.  3. An honest attempt at accomplishing something.  4. Something done or produced through exertion; an achievement.

Etiquette n. – 1. The practices and forms prescribed by social convention or by authority.  2. Appropriate social behavior.  3. Good manners.

Foster v. – 1. To nurture.  2. To promote the growth and development of.  3. To nurse, cherish.

Guard Against v. – 1. To protect from.

Honor v. – 1. To hold in respect; esteem.  2. To show respect for.  3. To accept as valid.  – n. 1. A code of integrity, dignity, and pride.

Impetuous adj. – 1. Marked by sudden and forceful energy or emotion; impulsive and passionate.  2. Having or marked by violent force.

Path n. – 1. A road, way, or track made for a particular purpose.  2. A course of action or conduct.

Perfection n. – 1. The quality or condition of being perfect.  2. The act or process of perfecting.  3. A person or thing considered to be perfect.  4. An instance of excellence.

Principle n. – 1. A basic truth, law, or assumption.  2. A rule or standard, especially of good behavior.  3. A fixed or predetermined policy or mode of action.

Respect v. – 1. To feel or show deferential regard for; esteem.  2. To avoid violation of or interference with.  – n.  1. Willingness to show consideration or appreciation.

Spirit n. – 1. The vital principle or animating force within living things.  2. The part of a human being associated with the mind, will, and feelings.  3. The essential nature of a person or group.  4. Strong loyalty or dedication.  5. The actual though unstated sense or significance of something (the spirit of the law).

Strive v. – 1. To exert much effort or energy; endeavor.  2. To try real hard.  3.  To struggle or fight forcefully; contend.

Truth n. – 1. Something that is consistent with fact or reality.  2. A statement proven to be or accepted as true.  3. Sincerity; integrity.  4. Maintaining a certain standard.  5. Reality; actuality.
